Huffington Park’s recently completed $200,000 improvement is the final parks project for West University Place until the city council appoints a new Parks and Recreation board in late September.
On Thursday, August 26, the City hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the completion of the park, which includes new play structures, expanded green space, and the City’s first rubber-capped sidewalk.
The improvements also include improved drainage and landscaping, benches and picnic tables placed in natural shade, a new drinking fountain with a bottle filler feature, ivy removal and wooden fence replacement along the southern perimeter, and the installment of two Expression Swings.
This is the fourth outdoor project the Friends of West University Parks Fund partnered with the City to fund since 2019. The nonprofit also funded the improvements of the Colonial Park pool, Colonial Park playground and Whitt Johnson Park.
According to Parks and Recreation Director Susan White, future potential park projects include minor improvements to Judson Park, which will take place in 2022, and a “major update” to Wier Park in 2023.
